Eclipses

Solar eclipse

A new moon so well aligned that the Moon passes IN FRONT of the Sun and hides its disc.

The same low point as a new moon, more pronounced. An eclipse announces nothing and predicts nothing: it is a shadow, on a date known centuries in advance.

Lunar eclipse

A full moon so well aligned that the Moon crosses Earth's shadow and turns red.

The same high point as a full moon, more pronounced. Again: this is geometry, not a warning.

See the calculated example
20262027 plane of Earth’s orbit
Each dot is a new moon (dark) or a full moon (light) of 2026-2027, placed by how far the Moon is above or below the plane of Earth’s orbit. Most pass too high or too low: only those that fall near the line make an eclipse (circled).
