Signs and constellations

What it changes

Nobody "changed your sign": the two systems measure different things, and both positions below are computed from your birth. Western astrology reads the signs; the starry sky tells the constellations. You are allowed to prefer either — or both.

What it is

Signs are not constellations. The sign zodiac cuts the Sun's path into twelve equal 30° slices, anchored to the spring equinox. Constellations are star figures with irregular borders, fixed by astronomers in 1930 — and the Sun crosses thirteen of them, including Ophiuchus, from November 30 to December 18.

Inner ring: the twelve signs, 30° each, counted from the spring equinox. Outer ring: the thirteen constellations the Sun really crosses, of unequal sizes, Ophiuchus included. Today the Sun is at 12°08′ Scorpio (the sign) and in front of the constellation of Libra.
